Local opposition to the Hallō Nelson development project is rapidly increasing as more Nelsonites add their names to online and paper petitions aimed at stopping the luxury housing project at Granite Pointe Golf Club. The petition, titled HellNō Hallō: Stop the Hallō Nelson Development — Housing for All, Not for the Few, has gathered over 2,000 signatures since it was launched on September 13 via Change.org.
The petition reflects concerns that the project prioritizes profits over community needs. As the petition states, "We find it unacceptable for this land to be used for luxury developments of second and third homes for the ultra-wealthy," especially during a severe local housing crisis. The developers' plans, which include flying residents in by private jets, are being criticized as "out of touch with the values and culture of our community."
The Hallō Nelson project, set to begin construction in 2024, will introduce over 300 residential units alongside "The Dodger," Canada’s first Troon-managed golf course. Initial plans include 24 fully furnished townhomes on the first fairway, complete with a heated pool, gym, tennis courts, and an art pavilion. Subsequent phases will add more residences, retail spaces, boutique lodging, restaurants, and even an outdoor ice-skating rink.
While the City of Nelson approved the land to be rezoned in 2019, local opposition is now mounting as the petition aims to make city officials reconsider their support for the project. Petitioners argue that the luxury-focused development ignores the pressing housing needs of Nelson residents in favour of catering to an affluent, non-resident clientele.
